Markets We Serve
Since the first Versawave products became commercially available in 2004 our modulators have been at the cutting edge of optical systems. From advanced research centers around the world to deployment in civil and military applications used for such diverse systems such as; remoteing of dual polarization doplar radars, anti-electronic warfare, optical encryption and very high speed complex modulation schemes for data transport.
With the same device able to support both digital and analogue, and the bandwidth to allow either broadband digital or multiple analogue channels, system designs are able to build systems address multiple requirement utilizing a single Electrical to Optical solution.
Aviation
Photonic systems that deliver performance advantages compared to high speed electrical systems also offer size, weight and power (SWAP) savings while being more resistant to electromagnetic interference. Aviation systems’ designers are now using photonic networks to integrate critical systems that span navigation, communication and radar.
Our modulators are used in applications that work in both the microwave and high speed digital domains.
Marine
Photonic systems are also helping to make advancements in the marine sector. Marine optical networks referred to as SWAN (Ship Wide Area Network) enable increased capability and higher performance. These closed fiber loop networks connect the ships’ navigation power and control systems, as well as carry data, video and voice information.
Versawave is working with research scientists in the marine systems’ sector by providing custom modulators with class leading bandwidth, high optical power handling, and high extinction ratios.
Optical Encryption
Some of the ways in which optical encryption is being applied takes advantage of quantum spin states of light. Versawave polarization modulators are being used in some of the most advanced physics laboratories in the world developing unbreakable cryptographic systems.
The Versawave, ultra high speed polarization modulators are able to encode and transmit cryptographic keys at class leading speeds. Custom polarization modulators that integrate multiple modulator sections in a single module that are able to modulate any input polarization state to another polarization state have been delivered and tested.
Space
Photonics and optical subsystems replacing conventional electronics in microwave and high speed data transmission is moving from concept to commercial deployment. The overwhelming increase in capacity as well as large reductions in the size weight and power required are driving the innovation taking place in the space sector.
Versawave is working with Dream Photonics Inc. to combine Silicon Photonics and advanced packaging methods to add more functionality and performance into compact modules. Work is ongoing to integrate lasers, amplifiers and photo receivers to meet applications specific requirements.
Stand alone Versawave modulators has been identified in the space sector for many years as a performance leader for its low drive voltage, low optical loss, compact size and stability in harsh environments.
Data Communications
With ever increasing demand for higher capacity, both per optical fiber and system basis, optical transmitter components that can encode data at high rates using less power are in demand. As data centers adapt to changing business workflows, communication systems need to provide flexibility in sending information over greater distances using complex modulation formats.
Versawave has provided devices that have empowered many advancements in these areas, such as, polarization bit interleaving to increase transmission distances and modulators that generate optical frequency combs that create multiple sets of optical frequencies from a single laser. Each frequency can then be used carry separate data streams.
Data centers and central offices are under constant pressure to reduce power consumption and be more space efficient. Managing the heat generated from systems that are becoming increasing in density is a huge issue particularly for data centers located in hot climates.
Versawave is teaming up with Dream Photonics to create optical transmission modules that provide increased functionality and performance in packages that requires less power, space and are less costly than using individual components.
